Olymbia Kaboudahangi
ISBN 9781907091209 Paperback 176 pages £12.00
Abandoned as a child, Petal is determined to push her way to the top of the celebrity tree, without caring who gets hurt in the process. Aided by magic spells and herbal charms, she cheats and beguiles her way to wealth and fortune. Finally she gets her come-uppance. This is a totally surreal adult fairytale with its roots in painful reality, all told in wickedly witty rhyming couplets. It is also a veritable witch's treasure chest, including as it does dozens of authentic herbal remedies, charms and spells.

“Each chapter opens with a description of its rune and consists of a lengthy poem of leonine rhyme (internal rhymes where the middle and end of a line rhyme) that is extremely effective in telling the story.
An unusual and certainly surreal poem of magical celebrity success that demands re-reading. Well-produced, it’s definitely worth a look for poetry lovers... Recommended.”

INTRODUCTION
On a cold, miserable Halloween night two small children are abandoned in the woods. After escaping from the shape-shifting witch and the three mysterious Men in Black, the girl vows never to be vulnerable again and sets her sights on becoming rich and powerful ...allowing no one, and nothing, to get in her way. From humble beginnings Petal will claw her way to the top of Cuckoo Land society, manipulating the media and the public along the way, until she accomplishes her dream of fame and riches; however, in Cuckoo Land, people are rarely what they seem...
The rhyming couplets which tell the story capture and blend the essence of old and new in a way that prose could never do. Mysterious observers from another dimension watch and wonder as our all-too-human characters play their adult fairy-tale roles. Betrayal, selfishness, cruelty and deception leave havoc in their wake, and herbal remedies, charms and spells play their part in supporting Petal's obsessive drive towards celebrity status.
Although the origin of the twenty-four Runes is shrouded in mystery and mythology, their portrayal of human psychology is as real today as it ever was, and they each represent a chapter of this book. Even today, the wisdom of the ancients can help us interpret events unfolding in our lives and act as signposts on our spiritual journey to enlightenment, guiding us and allowing us to make informed choices, but they can also force us to acknowledge truths about ourselves that we would rather ignore. Ultimately we must all choose our own path in life, but it is only by truly understanding ourselves that we can ever hope to understand those around us.

MANIPULATION
THIEF REPELLING CHARMS
To repel thieves hang a sachet of JUNIPER berries above the door.
Sprinkle your house with dried ROSEMARY and CARAWAY,
(any object containing caraway seeds is said to be theft-proof).
Burn VETIVERT oil as an anti-theft incense.
A good thing to remember, and a better thing to do, Is work with the construction team and not the wrecking crew...
The Doctor woke up terrified. ‘Go back to sleep, I’m fine,’ he lied. The bed-side clock said ten past three as his wife asked him sleepily, ‘How did the meeting go today?’ He said, ‘It’s too early to say.’ ‘What information do you lack?’ She gently stroked his aching back And whispered softly, ‘It’s alright,’ she leaned across to switch the light, ‘Where is it now? Read it to me.’ The envelope was stamped R.D. Before extracting the short note he rubbed his eyes and cleared his throat.
The letter began, ‘Darling son, we’re sorry for what we have done. We only did it for the best, I think that you can guess the rest...’ The next line had been scribbled out but squinting he could just about Make out, faintly, the word ‘pleading’ as the man continued reading. ‘...And the sin will reverberate like a spoke in the wheel of fate, Your mother doesn’t have a clue... God only knows what she would do! I’ll know more when we get his file, the rest will come out in the trial.’ Pulling the blankets to her chin, she told him, ‘It would be a sin Not to notify Hansel first, I know that you can’t be coerced, It’s been so long, does it matter? And he’s as mad as a hatter, Perhaps this was his destiny...’ – ‘I’d want to know if it was me.’ ‘Does she suspect... d’you think she knows?’ – ‘If she does it will come to blows And she will kill the lot of us...’ – ‘Then give it back to Icarus.’

Olymbia Kaboudahangi was born in Athens in 1961, but with her parents she moved to England when she was six. The hardest part of that, she says, was having to leave her Godmother, the woman who had instilled in her a love of herbs and plants, and a fascination with their medicinal uses. Her Godmother would have loved the Runes. She was also an expert in fortune-telling and during summer holidays she would read Olymbia's cup and make predictions that always came true.
